Choosing an Allergy Free, Healthy Dog

When buying a dog, make sure that the dogs eyes are clear. Paleness of the eyes is a sign that the dog might be suffering from some underlying disease. The nose should be moist and the gums are pink. The skin of an allergy free dog should be smooth, without scales, free from fleas, ticks and no visible redness. The coat should be shiny, soft and full. If you go to the breeders home, observe the parents of the dog as this would helpful in giving you an idea more or less what kind of dog it will be when it grows up.

These signs of a healthy dog are just a few of the things to consider before bringing a dog home. Research any breed thoroughly before getting that puppy.

Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

Many children and even adults are highly allergenic to almost everything. If your one of those, you need a hypoallergenic dog breed. According to veterinarians, it is the skin dander that causes the allergic reactions and not the length of the coat. Among the dog breeds that don't shed include Bichon Frise, Toy Poodle, Mini Schnauzer, Shih Tzu and the Maltese Terrier.

Is Benadryl Safe for Dogs with Allergies?

According to VetPets, Benadryl (Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride) is a fairly safe drug to use in most pets. It primarily stops the itching and calm down allergic reactions caused by insect bites and stings. Common side effects, Tylenol, its active ingredient makes your dog sleepy. Caution is advised for pregnant pets. Always discuss the use of Benadryl for your dog with your vet first as some human over-the-counter drugs are toxic and can be fatal to pets and it may also interact with drugs that your pet is taking. Your veterinarian will also give you the safe dosage range based on the weight, age, condition of your dog.

Benadryl generally does a fair job for itching in dogs but may only work temporarily. It is not usually effective for long term use. The best way to treat your dog is to find out what the cause of your dogs allergies and have her treated appropriately. Try giving your dog raw bones as this is how dogs naturally eat or instead of her regular dog food, try cooked or raw meat and vegetables for 1 to 2 weeks and see if the symptoms stops. While Benadryl relieves dog itching, it won't get rid of your dogs skin condition.
